At a glance

Numbers worth keeping close.

These figures describe national surveys and assessments. They are not a measure of any one family, child, or faith community.

01

28%

of children ages 6–17 read books for fun five to seven days a week.

Scholastic calls these children frequent readers. The figure comes from its eighth Kids & Family Reading Report, fielded in late 2022 and released in 2023.

02

46% → 15%

is the drop in frequent reading from ages 6–8 to ages 15–17.

The same 2023 report found that reading for fun becomes less frequent as children grow older, which makes sustained family conversation about books especially valuable.

03

90%

of parents agree that books can create opportunities for conversation.

This finding reflects parents’ view of books as a natural starting point for meaningful talks, not simply a solo activity.

04

59%

of parents have used a children’s book to help their child with a specific feeling or emotion.

Among the most common emotions named were confidence and anger, showing how stories often become a gentle language for a hard-to-name experience.

05

30%

of U.S. fourth-grade public-school students performed at or above NAEP Proficient in reading in 2024.

NAEP Proficient is a rigorous benchmark for solid academic performance. It is not the same measure as a local grade-level standard.

06

41%

of American adults were Bible Users in 2025.

American Bible Society defines a Bible User as someone who reads, listens to, or prays with the Bible outside a church service at least three times a year.

07

20%

of American adults were classified as Scripture Engaged in 2025.

This measure combines frequency of Bible use with its role in decision-making and relationships, so it is more demanding than Bible use alone.

08

51%

of American adults said they wish they read the Bible more.

The finding points to a broad appetite for accessible, encouraging ways to make Scripture part of ordinary life.

09

62%

of digital Bible Users reported using Bible apps in 2025.

Print remains meaningful, while digital formats give many readers another practical way to keep Scripture close during the week.
